What was it like to change from all-girls to a coeducational college?
How does it affect the social skills of the female?
Is it an advantage for the the female students?
What do you think are the reasons why parents wants their daughter to study in an exclusive all-girls school in College?
For years, my school is an exclusive all-girls Catholic school for highschool and college. But then, last year it started accepting male applicants. More than 50% of the student’s parents disagreed but our school continued to accept male applicants.
I went to all-girls schools through grade 12. (like you they were Catholic)
I am a big advocate. I think it is empowering for girls/women. We ruled the playground and the classroom was ours. It was nice not to have to worry about all the dress and boy stuff and could really concentrate more on academics. I forged sisterhoods there that will last forever.
Virtually, without exception all my friends from back then have turned out to be beyond normal fully realized women. I am not saying there have not been problems–but on the whole, as I see it, we all turned out better as a group than those I know who went to public schools. While the Catholic educucation by itself is an important component–I think the same gender aspect was even more.
I went on the co-ed college. I was ready for the change at that time. However, it was not a big adjustment. I was more than prepared for college both academically and socially.
If my daughter shows any inclination at all of going to all girls college I will do nothing but encourage her. Although I have not experienced that level of same gender education, I can not but think it would be as good as my foundation education was.
It is too bad your school changed. I actually thought the trend was swinging back the other direction. I know that the federal government recently adopted regulations making it easier for public schools to have same gender education. And I think with post-modern feminism a lot of the wind has gone out of the female critics.
I blogged about all of this in http://blog.360.yahoo.com/blog-GgIFACYzfqWx8YwvtspSWVmWzA–?cq=1&p=3661
